Frequently asked questions.

What is equine-assisted learning (EAL)?

Equine-assisted learning is a guided, experiential process where interactions with horses support self-awareness, emotional regulation and personal insight.

Rather than riding, sessions take place on the ground — through observing, connecting, and responding to the horses in a calm, reflective environment.

What’s the difference between equine-assisted learning and equine-assisted therapy?

Equine-assisted learning (EAL) focuses on personal growth, awareness and how we relate — to ourselves, others and the world around us.

Equine-assisted therapy, on the other hand, is a clinical service delivered by a qualified therapist, often working with specific mental health diagnoses or therapeutic goals.

At Aura, we currently offer equine-assisted learning.
While sessions can feel deeply supportive, they are not a substitute for therapy or medical treatment.

Corinna is currently completing her Diploma of Counselling, with plans to offer equine-assisted counselling in the future.

Is equine-assisted learning right for me?

EAL may be supportive if you’re feeling:

  • overwhelmed, anxious or disconnected

  • curious about yourself and your patterns

  • drawn to horses, nature or a slower, more grounded way of being

  • in a season of change, growth or reflection

You don’t need to have the “right reason” — just a willingness to show up as you are.

If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to chat and explore whether this feels like the right fit for you.

Do I need horse experience?

Not at all.
Our sessions are designed for everyone — even if you’ve never been around horses before.

All you need is curiosity and a willingness to engage.

Do you offer horse riding?

No — our sessions are entirely ground-based.

At Aura, the focus is on connection, awareness and presence with the horses, rather than riding.
Working on the ground allows for a slower, more attuned experience where both you and the horse can engage freely.

How do horses support emotional awareness?

Horses are highly perceptive and responsive to their environment.

They often mirror what we bring into the space — helping us notice patterns, regulate our nervous system, and reconnect with ourselves in a quiet, non-verbal way.

What happens in a session?

Each session is gently guided and unfolds at your pace. This may include:

  • observing or interacting with the horses

  • simple, guided groundwork activities

  • grounding and awareness practices

  • space for reflection, conversation or quiet presence

There is no pressure to perform — this is a space to slow down and be.

Is it safe?

Yes — both physical and emotional safety are a priority.

Sessions are facilitated in a calm, supported environment with experienced, carefully selected horses.
We work in a way that honours both human and horse — participation is always invitational, never forced.

Can sessions be funded through NDIS?

NDIS funding for equine-assisted learning can be limited and is assessed on an individual basis.

In some cases, sessions may be supported under Capacity Building if they align with a participant’s goals — such as emotional regulation, social skills, or confidence building.

We recommend discussing this with your support coordinator or plan manager.
We’re happy to provide information about our sessions to assist with this process.

What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that plans can change.

Please provide at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your session. Changes made within this timeframe can be moved to a new date.

Cancellations with less than 48 hours’ notice, or non-attendance, may result in the full session fee being charged.

Sessions are held outdoors and can still go ahead in light rain. However, in the case of strong winds, thunderstorms, or any other safety concerns, sessions will be rescheduled at no cost.

What should I wear or bring?

  • Closed-toe shoes (required)

  • Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing that can get a little dirty

  • A hat and water bottle

Everything else is taken care of.
